Famous people with Crohn's

A discussion elsewhere on this site led me to google "celebrities with Crohn's". The results were really suprising. I'm amazed at how many famous sports people have crohn's. I don't know about you, but I certainly wouldn't be able to cope with the rigorous training schedule most of these professional athletes undertake. Anyway here is the (by no means definitive) list...

(from Wikipedia)

The following is a list of notable people diagnosed with Crohn's disease.

Steve Redgrave also has UC. That blows me away, he won gold medals at five separate Olympic games.

Dwight Eisenhower 34th U.S. President (Crohn's Disease) In 1956 Eisenhower developed vague, ill-defined discomfort in the right lower quadrant of his abdomen. Without surgery, Eisenhower's bowel obstruction could easily have killed him, but it was risky for him to have surgery because Eisenhower had had a serious heart attack just nine months earlier. As you might expect, it is difficult to decide to operate on the President of the United States when he might not survive the operation. Ultimately, Eisenhower had 30 to 40 cm of the terminal ileum removed, and was given an internal ostomy.

Rolf Benirschke Former NFL Placekicker for the San Diego Chargers (Ulcerative Colitis) He had a great career playing for 10 years and setting all kinds of records. The really astounding part is that he played all those years while fighting ulcerative colitis. The last 7 years of his career he played after having ostomy surgery. Benirschke has made a difference in many people's lives with the founding of the Great Comebacks Awards Program, which tells the success stories of people with Crohn's disease, colitis, colon cancer or who have had an ostomy surgery

(see his Web site at www.greatcomebacks.com).

Animal's also have been dx with crohns & colitis ..

Also I cant remember his name but did not see it on the list was the guy that played the painter on the Murphy Brown show.  They only knew he had it because when they found him dead there was asacol and 6 mp in his medicine cabinet and he was missing his spleen and parts of his intestines I believe it was.  There was a story about it a couple of years ago.  Thanks for the list that is interesting.

Wow, that's pretty neat. Some of those people live such active lifestyles, it's hard to imagine them with Crohn's.

These famous people had ostomy bags. I'm sure there are 100's more but it's not really the kind of thing a celebrity is going to talk about.

    Vice President Hubert Humphrey

    President Dwight Eisenhower,

The Queen Mother Elizabeth of Great Britain

Moshe Dayan, former Defense Minister of Israel also had an ostomy.

Rolf Bernischke, ex-kicker for the San Diego Chargers has an ileostomy.

    Senior PGA Golfer Al Geiberger.
